FAQs for Salons

Q
How do I buy Naturasun products?
A
Please call our head office on 0870 240 7072 where our friendly sales team will be able to help you with your enquiry. If you are interested in buying an Equator spray booth, we will happily send a sales representative to your salon for an in-depth discussion.

Q
What’s the difference between clear and bronze?
A
Some Naturasun sunsprays are available in two forms: clear or bronze. The difference between them is that clear sunsprays do not contain the cosmetic colour guide that is present in the bronze sunsprays. Clear sunspray is, as the name suggests, a clear liquid that will give a tan with an intensity similar to the corresponding bronze Spray. Despite the fact that most technicians prefer bronze sunsprays, mainly due to their ease of application, clear sunsprays offer distinct benefits. These sprays are perfect for customers that have a mature skin or open pores, as the colour guide in these cases can highlight imperfections. Clear sunspray is normally used just on the face and neck and in those cases these areas should be sprayed until almost wet looking to ensure best results.

Q
I have a customer with sensitive skin, can they use Naturasun?
A
As long as the client has not had any reaction to fake tans in the past (allergy to DHA) they should be fine, if the client is unsure or has not used sunless tanners in the past, it is worth doing a patch test. If you offer a range of sprays in your salon it would be best to do test patches with the different types i.e a Bronze spray, Clear and Just E (which contains no DHA). This is to discover what element of the spray, if any, the customer is allergic to. Do the patch test on the inside arm above the wrist, at least 24 hours before the treatment.

Q
I have a customer with eczema, can they use Naturasun?
A
The client will need to exfoliate well and make sure that they avoid applying the heavy duty barrier creams which can be prescribed before the spray during and the 12 hour development time. When spraying, go lightly on any dry areas as they will absorb more product and can be patchy. We recommend mixing a spray with a little Bromo+ or a light spraying of Bromo+ over the top of an applied spray as this is a rich moisturising product.

Q
My client has reacted to a sunless tanner before, is there a Naturasun product that they can try?
A
We offer a great range of sprays and can usually find something for everyone! Clients with sensitive skins are most likely to react with the spray guide in the product rather than the DHA, as during the 12 hour development time this can irritate the skin. The best option is to do a patch test on the client. We produce a spray called Just E that uses Erythulose to tan instead of DHA for those allergic to Dihydroxideacetone.

Q
My client has recently had an operation, are they safe to use Naturasun?
A
Naturasun should never be applied to open wounds due to the spray being sugar based which can influence bacteria growth during the 12 hour development period. As long as any scarring is settled (not red and has a good covering of skin) it is safe to use Naturasun. Tattoos: wait until they are fully healed before spraying with Naturasun. Please note that scar tissue is unlikely to tan like the rest of the body – as with tanning in the sun.

Q
A customer had a tan yesterday and has reported that it has gone streaky and patchy, what do I do?
A
Always get the client into the salon as soon as possible where a complaint has been reported. This is important as it gives you an opportunity to see the results as opposed to hearing someone talking about the tan. Check your client profile sheet and see how the client answered the questions. Check the Pre-tanning instructions to be sure that the client has not used any moisturising products and has prepared the skin properly. Check the post tan instructions to make sure the client has not put anything on the skin or done anything to affect the development of the tan and that they have left the product on their skin for the 12 hour development time. Note the areas that have gone patchy and find out the clothing the client has been wearing (i.e. long boots causing patchy legs, etc) If you need any guidance, contact your local distributor. Another alternative may be the spray or the equipment used to apply the spray, if you have noticed any change in how the equipment is spraying or in the spray itself, contact your distributor who will be able to double check the equipment is set up correctly. If you have had more than 3 complaints, head office will request a sample of the spray you have used on the clients for testing.

Q
My client is on HRT/the pill, can they still use Naturasun?
A
Naturasun is absolutely fine to use for customers on HRT or the Pill. As the tanning reaction is only on the surface layer of the skin, hormones should not affect the tan. As always, the client needs to prepare the skin properly for tanning and follow the post tanning instructions.

Q
My client wants to go on a sunbed during their development time, is this ok?
A
We recommend against this. Being on a sunbed can cause sweating which could cause the tan to streak or tan unevenly. Once the 12 hour development time is over, the client may do so.
Q
My customer has been having chemotherapy treatment, are they safe to have a Naturasun?
A
Chemotherapy can affect the skin in many ways causing hypersensitivity and skin irritations. It is recommended that most beauty treatments be avoided for the duration of chemotherapy and for the following 6 months afterwards. If the client still wants to go ahead, always get them to complete the client profile sheet and do a patch test to be sure that there is no adverse reaction. Be aware that the client can be very prone to sickness due to the chemotherapy, if the client reports that they have had ill effects since the Naturasun it is more likely that the chemotherapy has caused the problem.

Q
Is Naturasun safe to use on children?
A
Naturasun has been developed for use on all skin types and all ages. We recommend that anyone under the age of 16 is accompanied by an adult when being sprayed and that a letter of consent has been written and signed by a parent or guardian for your protection. Bear in mind that young children are difficult to keep still at the best of times – so it can be hard to make sure that the child will stay still long enough to be sprayed and that they do not touch the tan to make it develop unevenly. Note: The retail product Teen Tan has been developed as a top up product for teenage skins.

Q
My client has vitaligo, can they use Naturasun?
A
Vitaligo is a common skin condition where the skin pigment is uneven and has white patches. Vitaligo is not contagious and can develop at any age. The tanning ingredient in Naturasun (DHA) was used after the second World War as a medical treatment for Vitaligo. It is safe to use Naturasun on these clients and can even-out the skin tone. It is recommended that you choose a colour from the range that is as close to the client’s natural skin tone as possible to even the skin tone before attempting tanning any darker.
